Revere Beach

I’ve been really busy with business lately. So busy, in fact, that I haven’t shot any personal work in nearly a year! For two weeks in July I assisted the instructor at CDIA’s high school photography summer camp. One of my favorite things about teaching (and I experience this with my middle school students) is getting to see through other photographers’ eyes. The quality of the work was tremendous, and I was really inspired to take some photos for myself! As part of the camp we went on a field trip to Revere Beach in pursuit of interesting people. We were there during the sand sculptures, but my photographic goal was to make photos that said “hot day at the beach” because we were there on a ridiculously hot day at the beach. I only shot ten frames while we were there (the other time was spent helping the students and eating the worst beach food ever). Here are my favorite four!

I got to a job early yesterday and after setting up, was faced with ten minutes of nothing to do! And so I had an opportunity to do what I love to do – take photos for no particular purpose. This is my favorite!

Zombie Movie-esque Tree

After our Zombie experience, we headed over to my Uncle’s place for an Easter feast! En route, we encountered this tree in the town next to the town I grew up in. I had never noticed it before! I wanted to stop and take a photo, but decided that it would be better to wait until afterwards since we were running late due to our near escape from the Zombie Outbreak in Cambridge.

On our way home, my husband and sister reminded me about the tree. We stopped, and the light was beautiful… and also kind of creepy, in a Zombie Movie type of way!

Well, not really. More like “Halloween in April!”

Yesterday was the annual Zombie Parade in Somerville/Cambridge. It was awesome!!!!

The Zombies marched from Davis Square to Harvard Square. We were only able to check out the beginning of the parade because it was on Easter, and we wanted to spend some time with the fam!

This next shot is from the very beginning of the parade – watch out – OUTBREAK!

This zombie totally attacked me and nearly got blood on my camera! Luckily I was able to escape in time!

This guy was NOT happy about the zombies.

Photographer-Zombie! And LOVE the tie! Maybe this will be me next year.

This is a photo of my sister outrunning the zombies – thankfully she too made it out in time and did not become t a Zombie.

Hello all!

When I decided to make a website for my business, I wanted it to focus on weddings/portraits/performing arts etc., all of the things I do photographically for clients. It made me sad, though, because the reason I got into photography was because I love to make images of things, places, and people who don’t know that I’m taking their photo.

I therefore decided to keep my old website alive and well at www.leahlariccia.com. This is where I will showcase the photography I do for myself. From travel photography to personal projects, the old site will be a place to display the personal images the remind me why I love photography.

Please check it out! The site has a slightly new format – the portfolios are separated into color vs. black and white portfoliors, but the basic collections are the same. They are divided into things, places, and people. Some of the photos are actually favorites from jobs I’ve done – from portraits, events, and weddings. I hope you like it, and check back soon for a new personal project I’m working on that I am SUPER excited about!

I discovered that my cousins made the best gingerbread house EVER when I went to their house on Christmas Eve.

The high points were a marshmallow snowball fight and…

… a gingerbread snow angel!

I will be taking a brief hiatus from the blog during the holidays, but will be back soon!

I historically have adored the holiday season and was that person who could barely get through Thanksgiving in order to start decorating for Christmas! Things have sadly changed over the past few years and I have found myself turning into a bit of a Scrooge. I was extremely aware of these changes this year, and have therefore done everything possible to regain my spirit . We have an adorable Christmas tree this year and under it are sparkling and shiny gifts for our loved ones (yes, folks, I like to go Christmas shopping and didn’t do it last year). I’ve been listening to holiday tunes non-stop on the radio (where would we be without Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime?”) and I hosted my annual Carol Fest, which reminded me that friends are family. We will host Christmas Day with stuffed stockings and homemade gnocchi at our new home… but I’m still not where I used to be in terms of holiday-related excitement.

So I thought “What will help attain my normal level of excitement about Christmas?”

The answer seemed obvious once it came to me: A Return of the Jedi/Broadway-hybrid holiday card!

What says Holiday Spirit more than an action figure wearing a Santa Hat at a composite Radio City Music Hall? Nothing, folks, nothing.

Portraits

I watched a documentary on Henri Cartier-Bresson a couple weeks ago, and can’t stop thinking about his portrait work. Photography would not be what it is today without Cartier-Bresson, and despite having looked at his photos a zillion times prior to watching the documentary I had very little, if any, familiarity with his portraiture. His portrait of Marilyn Monroe particularly stands out – because she does not know that her portrait is being made, it is one of the most honest and beautiful images of her ever captured.

At events I tend to walk around during cocktail hours and dinners to take pictures of the guests. I generally think of these photographs as more of a record of who is in attendance, but after watching the documentary, I decided to look back at one event and think of these photos more as portraits than records.
