I met Rich at a party in December and thought “What an interesting and expressive face! I must photograph it!”
Shortly thereafter I spoke to the party’s hostess and asked her if she thought Rich might be interested in coming into the studio for a session.
Months later, Rich materialized and it turned out that he was a stage actor in need of headshots! Perfect!
When Rich arrived in the studio last weekend, I knew it was going to be fun. I decided that it would be best to first try some standard expressions since my work tends towards the zany and I thought it might be nice for me and Rich to have some “normal” facial expressions in our portfolios.

We had more fun, however, acting and being silly. I love when photography becomes theater, and that’s what happened when Rich appeared on-set. Rich let me shoot for a long time which allowed me to capture a zillion different facial expressions.
Here is a medley of some of my favorites (and oh how hard it was to choose a mere nine!). I shot Rich on a white background so as to have maximum flexibility in post-production. I played with the images in Photoshop to see if I could change the background colors to give the varied expressions different energies.

Thanks Rich! I learned a great deal from our session and hope to work with you again!
